Post Unemployment in Oman Article

Unemployment in Oman; A future Crisis

Unemployment can be clearly understood when there is a person who is available for work, but is incapable of obtaining it because there is no vacancy. Unemployment is really a serious phenomenon in many countries. Compared to other countries, Oman has less unemployment rate. In fact, the rate of unemployment is currently between 5% and 6%. Studies have reported that young Omanis who are under the age of 25 years have much higher rate of unemployment than the rest of the population. Being a third-year IT student at the College of Applied Sciences, Nizwa, the problem of unemployment frequently troubles me and my family which is looking for the financial support I can provide them with. I became more concerned when I heard the news that only 50 out of the 300 CAS 2005 graduates found a job upon graduation. This has also invoked my curiosity to explore the three main causes behind this problem in Oman.
One of the primary causes of unemployment in Oman is that the government is unable to keep a balance between the labor market’s requirements and the Higher Education Institutions’ outputs. In fact, there are many qualified Omanis who finished their higher studies but are still looking for suitable jobs. Some of them decided to look for jobs that are irrelevant to their qualifications. Moreover, Omanis with preparatory and secondary levels of education are the ones who suffer most from this problem, since the school education doesn’t equip them with the sufficient skills for any job. I believe that in order to solve this problem, the Ministry of Higher Education needs to tailor the needs of the market. In other words, it needs to carefully survey the market needs and then offer the majors that are highly required and drop the ones that are no longer needed. The survey of the market needs should be an ongoing process because the needs of today may not be the needs of tomorrow.
Another reason behind unemployment surprisingly comes from the employers themselves. Many employers and enterprises prefer expatriates more than locals for several reasons. First, they have long-held negative perceptions of nationals as less productive, unqualified and unmotivated laborers. In contrast, they view non-nationals as more efficient, experienced, versatile and professional. In addition, expatriates are often cheaper to hire than locals. Also, they are always ready to work in any given conditions as they are in dire need of money due to poverty at homeland. To bridge the gap between employers and local workers, he trust between the two should be enhanced and the views of both should be brought on table. Employers have to change their points of view as there are many capable Omanis whose experience and proficiency are exemplary.
The last reason behind unemployment strikingly comes from the person seeking the job. It is very common to hear about an unemployed Omani who is reluctant to accept the job offered because it doesn’t match his desired work conditions or estimated salary. Indeed, locals generally prefer to keep away from the hard physical occupations. As a solution, I suggest that we, as a society, need to change our opinion about those hard jobs that are considered to be of low value by stressing the fact that every single job is important in building our country. The government should also give incentives for Omanis who decide to go for these jobs, improve their work conditions and increase the salaries.
In conclusion, if unemployment continues on it current rate, it will absolutely become a worrying issue of the future of Oman. To avoid being trapped in this problem, the government needs to revise its education system and outputs in the light of the current market needs, so that the gap between the two can be bridged. Employers have to build their trust on the Omani labor and Omani society has to change its idea about the jobs that are currently referred to as low jobs.
